When God Feels Distant: How to Reconnect Spiritually During Hard Seasons
Feeling distant from God is one of the most painful and confusing experiences for a Christian woman. You may still pray, still attend church, still worship, yet emotionally, it feels like you're going through the motions. You may wonder if you’ve done something wrong, if God is disappointed in you, or if your faith isn’t strong enough. But spiritual dryness is not a sign of spiritual failure. It is a human experience, and Scripture is full of people who walked through it.
David wrote, “Why are You so far away, O Lord?” (Psalm 10:1 AMP).
Job cried out, feeling abandoned.
Even Jesus experienced the agony of emotional distance on the cross.
You are not alone. And you are not doing anything wrong.
Psychology tells us that when we experience stress, trauma, burnout, or emotional overload, our brain shifts into survival mode. When this happens, connection (even connection with God) becomes harder to access. Trauma research shows that the nervous system plays a huge role in how emotionally “close” someone feels to safe relationships (including God) (Siegel, 2012). When your nervous system is overwhelmed, your heart may feel quiet, numb, or disconnected.
Christian counseling helps you understand this without shame. Instead of assuming your spiritual life is broken, therapy helps you explore what emotional burdens, beliefs, or wounds may be creating this sense of distance. You may discover that grief, anxiety, perfectionism, chronic stress, or relational trauma have exhausted your emotional reserves, making it harder to feel God- even though He has never moved.
Scripture reiterates this truth gently:
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted…” (Psalm 34:18 AMP)
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 AMP)
In therapy, you learn how emotional healing and spiritual closeness often go hand-in-hand. As you process emotions you’ve suppressed, face fears you’ve been carrying, or work through experiences that shook your trust, your spirit begins to reopen. You may find that God feels closer in the small, quiet moments- a breath prayer, a slow morning, a gentle Scripture reading, a tearful session where you allow yourself to be honest.
Over time, you begin to feel again. You begin to hear again. You begin to sense God’s presence in new ways, not because you performed or proved yourself, but because you finally slowed down enough to notice His whisper.
If you are in a season where God feels distant, Christian counseling offers a gentle, nonjudgmental space to restore your spiritual and emotional connection. You’re not losing your faith- you’re healing your heart. And God is closer than you realize.
If you’re in a season where God feels far away, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Spiritual distance can feel isolating, confusing, and heavy — but it is also a place where God meets you tenderly. Christian counseling offers space to explore your emotions honestly, reconnect with your heart, and gently rediscover God’s nearness again.
If you’re longing to feel close to Him, to understand your own story, and to heal the places that have been hardened or overwhelmed, I’m here to walk with you through it.
